Today, one of my Social Work professors was talking about what’s going on with Ferguson. She’s a child and teen therapist, and one of the boys she works with came up to her the other day very concerned about it all. This boy is a 16 year old, straight-A football player, but he also happens to be a 6ft.3 black male in a very predominantly white county. He told her that he is terrified that what happened to Mike Brown will happen to him. He said that he gets stopped by police often, on no grounds of any offenses, just because of his color and size. He is weary that, one day, there may be a too excited and very biased police officer that will take it too far. If this doesn’t go to show you that racism and prejudice are alive and well, and what happened to Mike Brown is extremely unjust, I don’t know what will. These are our kids, our future. They are not thugs, they are not hoodlums, and they are NOT criminals that should be shot down because of their race. And, they most definitely should not be forced to being accustomed to living in fear.
